to new beginnings

it’s springtime, which means resetting, refreshing, opening the windows, cleaning out the closet, and trying not to stare directly into the news cycle all day long. did y’all clear the brush around the house yet?

it’s also Taurus season. don’t subscribe to astrology? think velvet chaos, snacks, naps, and a quiet resistance to being rushed. i would know — my birthday falls in this season, and so does Hera the cat’s (at least approximately; she’s a rescue and we think she was born sometime in April). which means we’ve been celebrating together for four years now. this year, we gathered around a fire in my backyard with some beloved friends, and each of us burned an object or a letter tied to something we wanted to let go of. puff. thin smoke into the night. thanks to Hera’s uncle Bron for our birthday picture above.

on April 1st, I moved my photography and video practice into a new studio in the Arts District that i am sharing with incredibly talented musicians Karim Abdel-Wadood, Sadie Ibrahim, and Parking Structure.

the space has two floors, each just over 1,000 sq ft: downstairs is part studio, part gallery; upstairs is where the music happens.

we want to start hosting music nights, screenings, gatherings, and small shows soon.

now the only question is: what do we call the place?

if you have any name ideas, let us know! i’ve been reading The Queer Arab Glossary for some inspo and there are some frontrunners but no winners, yet.

in the meantime, the studio is open for portraits, photos, videos, rehearsals, gatherings, and whatever else this strange little creative life requires.

if you’ve been needing new headshots or want to make photos and videos together, let’s talk.

with love,
zaf
